Railways Announce Upgrade Plan for 200 Rural Stations

The railway ministry on Friday unveiled a phased upgrade plan covering 200 rural and semi-urban stations, with an initial outlay focused on platform resurfacing, solar power installations, and digital ticketing counters.

Officials said the selection prioritised stations serving districts with limited road connectivity, where the railway station often functions as the primary link to district headquarters.

Local commuter groups welcomed the move but pointed out that train frequency, not just station infrastructure, remains their biggest concern, with several rural routes still running only one or two services a day.
