Inside the Village Still Waiting for Its First Paved Road

Sixty years after independence-era promises, residents of one hill village still carry the sick and the elderly on makeshift stretchers.

The nearest motorable road ends nearly six kilometres from Kandhpur, a small hamlet tucked into the hills where footpaths are the only way in or out.

GroundWire spent three days walking with residents as they carried an elderly patient down the same stretch of rocky trail that has, by villagers' count, claimed at least two lives during medical emergencies over the past decade. "Every government has promised us a road before elections. After elections, the file disappears," said the village head.

District officials, when contacted, said a proposal for the road is "under technical evaluation" and did not offer a timeline. Villagers say they have submitted the same petition five times since 2015.
