Heatwave Alert Issued as Temperatures Cross 45°C Across Region

The regional weather office issued a heatwave alert on Saturday after temperatures crossed 45 degrees Celsius in several districts, well above seasonal averages.

District authorities have been asked to open cooling shelters in public buildings, ensure water tankers are deployed in vulnerable neighbourhoods, and advise construction and farm labour to avoid working during peak afternoon hours. Schools in the worst-affected districts have shifted to morning-only schedules for the week.

Hospitals reported a rise in heat-related admissions, mostly among outdoor workers and the elderly. Officials urged residents to stay hydrated and check in on elderly neighbours living alone.
